Somewhere to Begin by Mika Jolie Review

Somewhere to Begin
 Poison and Wine #1
By: Mika Jolie
Release Date: September 20th, 2016
Self-Published
There are wounds that never show on the body.
For twenty-nine years, Colbie Bennington does as expected with an eternal smile stained on her lips. The biggest chances she’s ever taken can be counted on one hand, three fingers to be exact—her battered red chucks, painting her toenails a vibrant blue, and her wedding dress. Always the dutiful daughter and a Stepford fiancĂ©e, she has never acted on impulse, never been in love.
She’s never lived.
On her wedding day, Colbie ends a toxic relationship, drops the fake smile, and says, “I can’t do this anymore.”
Navy SEAL Zander Serrano returns home broken and burdened with a volcano of remorse. Too trapped in a mental war to be at peace and too damaged to be at war, he shuts the world out. The last thing he expects is to feel, especially for a runaway bride with her own baggage.
Two empty hearts marred in different spots find themselves drawn to one another. Each with their own scars.  Some, the world can see. Others, unseen to the naked eye.
They say two broken people should not be together. But for Colbie and Zander, their attraction is undeniable, unexpected.
Can two souls with fractured parts be the best cure for each other’s wounds?
Starting over is never easy, but sometimes in life, everyone needs somewhere to begin.

Colbie Bennington has been the perfect "Stepford daughter" for her cold parents. But it all comes to a head, when she defys her parents command to marry a man, whom on paper, seems the perfect fit, but behind closed doors, beats her! So Colbie flees in her wedding gown, to finally begin again…only to get into a car accident.

Navy SEAL Zander Serrano returns home full of survivors guilt and closes himself off, suffering through blackouts and and his PTSD, until he causes Colbie's accident. But that doesn't explain why he invited her to live with him…in a strictly landlord/renter way.

But that doesn't stops the sparks from flying between these two damaged individuals. Now if only they can get over the huge obstacles in front of them both, they just might have a chance together.

This book moved me in MANY ways; our hero was honest about his pain killers addiction and PTSD and our heroine battled to free herself from physical abuse and the long lasting after effects and then eventually manage to stand up for herself, which is a huge feat in and of itself. I loved the way that Colbie and Zander needed to save themselves before they saved each other! The other characters in this book were equally amazing, in different ways, and I cannot wait to read more about Max and Delia and Rafi and Paige…and yes! This is how I have paired them in my mind.

The plot was well thought out and researched and completely addictive from the moment Colbie ran away from the church. The writing is true Mika Jolie style, beautifully written and totally captivating.

I give Somewhere to Begin 5 stars!

Wrapped in Red
Martha's Way #3.5
By: Mika Jolie
Self-Published

Christmas is a time to be merry and bright. For Minka Montgomery, it’s anything but.

While Martha’s Vineyard bursts with festive lights and good cheer, a black shadow parades around and within Minka. With her Christmas spirit conspicuously absent, her marriage to Jason Montgomery has snowballed and is spiraling out of control.
The weight of motherhood–and her new role as a wife–presses on her shoulders. Self-doubt creeps in and swiftly turns to hopelessness.
As her anxiety level rises, can she share what’s in her heart with her husband? Is there a branch of hope to hold on to? With Christmas only twelve days away, can she find her Christmas spirit and rediscover the true meaning of the season?

Minka and Jason finally had their babies, but Minka is struggling, she feels like a failure, as if everything she does is not good enough, as if everyone else is able to take care of her children and her husband, except for her.

But it's not until Lily confronts her about having postpartum depression, does Minka realize what's wrong with her. But how can she ask Jason for help when she should be able to do it by herself? Isn't that what good mothers and wives do?!

I seriously want to commend the author Mika Jolie, for taking such a tough subject and with the aid of her amazing writing talent, write an amazing book that helps mother and soon to be mothers, realize that PPD isn't anything to be ashamed of and there is nothing wrong with asking for help. As a nanny I work for women with this depression and they want to hide it as something to be ashamed of, and that is FAR from the truth. So believe me I will be recommending this book to every mother I know.

But let's get back  to the story at hand, if you have had the opportunity to read The Scale, you will recognize the struggles that Minka and Jason have already gone through. But I do enjoy the way the author writes honestly about a women's body issues do not disappear into thin air, and never returns. I have to say, I love this update with the Martha's Way crew and I hope we will see them again and again.

I give Wrapped in Red 5 stars! And a huge Thank You to the author for tackling the sensitive subject of postpartum depression.

Tattooed Hearts by Mika Jolie Review

Being someone's first love is unforgettable. Being their last is immeasurable.

Claire Peters should be on top of the world. She owns the radio waves and has a budding movie career. But her heart longs to be rooted. Ten years ago, she fled Martha’s Vineyard to pursue her dream and to make something of herself. But there’s still a void. After a decade of running, she returns to the island hoping to find her happiness with the man she’s loved all her life.

When a tragic event shatters Dr. Forrest Desvareaux’ well-balanced world, the Vineyard’s hometown good guy discovers everything in his life is based on lies. Angry and betrayed, he turns to Claire – the one woman who has indelibly marked him.

Is it possible to run back to the person who broke you? Forever linked, Forrest and Claire are an unending continuum. But she’s a wildflower and Forrest’s roots run deep on the Vineyard. Can they accept home is not a place but a feeling?

The first word out of my mouth when I saw who the main characters in Tattooed Heart was FINALLY!!!
Claire Peters is back in Martha's Vineyard, she has made it to the pinnacle of her career, but yet she left behind the one person that meant the most to her! Why did she leave? It was because she never felt worthy of his love.
Dr. Forrest Desvareaux loved Claire with all his heart and 10 years ago, when she left him, it hardened him and his heart. But now she is back on the island and he tries to keep away, even though he wants to know why she left him all those years ago. But when she keeps showing up, the heat explodes between them and self-preservation blows out the window.
But then other lies are exposed and it brings back Forrest distrust of Claire and he banishes her from his life again, but this time Claire doesn't run, even though Forrest expects her too! And you are left wondering if Forrest will move past hurts of the past or cling to them like a life line.
Yet another amazing interracial love story by the extremely talented Mika Jolie. As I have said before, I have been waiting for Claire and Forrest's book from the very beginning and I have to say that I am not disappointed in the slightest! Though I will say, Tattooed Hearts brings both joy and sadness. Joy, because it is such a beautiful book, but sadness, because this is the end of the series.
But let’s get down to the basics shall we! The writing is flawless, the plot is great and the characters are simply perfect! Once I picked up this book, I honestly couldn't put it down. It brought out a wide arrange of emotions in me and I truly love it.
I give Tattooed Heart a well-deserved 10 out of 10.

Need You Now by Mika Jolie Review

Elementary school teacher Liliana Serrano has never been one to let others determine her future. Whether it’s her pack of three overly protective brothers or her Puerto-Rican, American heritage, she stands on her own. Which is exactly how she entered her arrangement with Adam Aquilani. The hot formula one driver is aloof, detached and not interested in relationship. After a cheating fiancĂ©, no strings attached sex was just what she needed.

Except one year later, they’re still hooking up and things aren’t so clear cut anymore. Especially when a surprise pregnancy enters the picture.

Adam is determined to marry Lily and raise their child as a family. But Lily refuses to settle for anything less than love.

As the two go on a journey of discovering, secrets are revealed, testing the strength of their connection. Can they learn not to give the past the power to define their future?

So after reading The Scale by Mika Jolie, I was eager to read another of her books. She recently released the second book in her Martha’s Way series called; Need You Now. I can honestly say it was a joy and a pleasure to read.
So we start the story with Lily; she was cheated on by her fiancĂ©, and now it would appear her “f**k buddy” has also been unfaithful. So after ignoring his calls and text messages, she was very surprised to see him asleep on her sofa.
Adam is not just any man, he is a F1 racing driver, who travels all over Europe, and even though this relationship was just supposed to be physical and casual, the thought of walking away from Lily has his stomach in knots.
But then something BIG happens that changes everything! Lily want’s to finish with Adam, but Adam wants to keep things as they are; until the truth comes out and his head is spinning…I am going to stop the story there, as I don’t want to spoil the story.
This story is truly amazing and I LOVED every second of it. I loved both Lily and Adam’s characters, but I truly loved Lily’s brother Rafa!
Mika’s writing simply flows off the page and at times it feels like all this is happening right in front of your eyes. I couldn’t find one plot hole. This book could be read as a stand-alone, but I think it would be much better if you read it in the series order.
Need You Now is such a fabulous book; you really need to read it. I give it 10 out of 10!
